The Migration Report in India which is released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation calculated that the migration rate in urban areas was 28.9%, and 26.5% in rural areas. The decision to migrate for work is driven by multiple factors, the most significant of them being the lack of employment opportunities at home. However, once they have migrated, individuals and families who labour for pay are often met with unsafe working conditions, a dire lack of sanitation and job insecurity. They must also struggle against a legal system that is lacking in providing necessary services and protections
Much of the struggles of migrant workers can be avoided through dedicated efforts to reduce their inevitability. LAWS aims to tackle these realities and alleviate the difficulties of migrant workers.Â
